Gonzales: Victoria's Best Beach Neighbourhood

Gonzales sits between Fairfield and Oak Bay, and it's one of those Victoria neighbourhoods that doesn't get talked about nearly as much as it should. It's quiet, it's residential, and it has one of the best beaches in the city sitting right at its edge.

Gonzales Bay is the draw. The water here is sheltered and noticeably warmer than most of Victoria's coastline, which makes the sandy beach a real swimming spot rather than just a place to look at the ocean. On any warm afternoon you'll see families out with kayaks and paddleboards, not just walkers. Boat rentals have operated out of the bay since at least 1907, which tells you this has been a gathering spot for well over a century.

Above the bay, Gonzales Hill Regional Park climbs through meadows and forest to the old Gonzales Observatory, built in 1915 at 302 Denison Street. It's one of the better short hikes in the city, and most visitors to Victoria never find it. The neighbourhood grew up around streets like Crescent Road, Earle Street, and Davie Street, and much of what's there today, the character homes as well as the multi-million-dollar oceanfront properties, dates from the 1920s and 30s onward.

The housing reflects the setting. Along Dallas Road and Hollywood Crescent, oceanfront homes run well into the multi-millions, and even set back from the water, Gonzales has some of the more substantial character homes in the core. Families are drawn in by Abkhazi Garden, a heritage property worth visiting on its own, and Glenlyon Norfolk School, one of the stronger independent options in the city. The Red Barn Market and Thrifty Foods cover day-to-day needs, and downtown is a short drive or a genuinely pleasant walk.

The neighbourhood is also home to Ross Bay Cemetery, one of the most significant historic cemeteries on the West Coast. It's the final resting place for many of Victoria's earliest settlers and politicians, and it doubles as a quiet, well-maintained green space for the neighbourhood. The Gonzales Neighbourhood Association and the wider Fairfield Gonzales Community Association keep the area active, from heritage walking tours to local events, which says something about how engaged residents here tend to be.

One of the things I point out to clients is how connected Gonzales is on foot. The waterside path along Dallas Road runs directly from Gonzales Bay to Beacon Hill Park and Ogden Point in one direction, and toward Oak Bay's Willows Beach in the other, which makes it one of the more genuinely walkable beach neighbourhoods in the city for anyone who wants the ocean to be part of their daily routine, not just a weekend destination.

It's also a neighbourhood that tends to stay quiet on the market. Because it's small, bordered tightly by Fairfield and Oak Bay, and made up mostly of long-held family properties, inventory here doesn't turn over the way it does in bigger neighbourhoods, which is part of why homes along Crescent Road and Hollywood Crescent tend to hold their value so consistently, and why I always tell buyers interested in Gonzales to be ready to move the moment something comes up.
